7 Steps to meeting
Texas Real Estate License
Requirements and obtaining
your Texas Real Estate License

Step 1  Take the required Texas real estate license courses at Champions School of Real Estate®.

With TREC-Approved college credit, you only need the following five courses totaling 150-hours (includes one elective course) to meet your Texas real estate license education requirements..

  • Law of Agency
  • Law of Contracts
  • Principles of Real Estate I
  • Principles of Real Estate II
  • Elective (Choose from over 20 course options!)
Without TREC-Approved college credit, you need seven classes (totaling 210 hours) and may choose any two additional 30-Hour courses from our course schedule.
Courses are available in the Classroom, Fast Track, Correspondence, and Online and discounted package pricing is available.

Step 2  Interview for a Sponsoring Broker

To have an active license, the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) requires that you work under a sponsoring broker. Click here for full list of broker interview questions to help you in selecting the real estate broker you want to work with.

Step 3  Submit the Evaluation of Education Documents form to the Texas Real Estate Commission

Once you have completed your courses at Champions, submit a copy of your certificates of completion for each course, a copy of your college transcript, and the Evaluation of Education Documents form to the Texas Real Estate Commission. Please include a $30 check or money order payable to TREC. NOTE: The copy of your college transcript must be a photocopy of an official transcript. Web or Online printouts of completed college courses will not be accepted.

Step 4  Submit your Application for an Inactive license to TREC

After your education has been evaluated and approved, you can submit the Application for an Inactive Salesperson's License online (at www.trec.state.tx.us) or by mail along with $104.50 payable to TREC. If mailing, you may also submit your Sponsoring Broker form (if known); otherwise, you may submit this form at a later date. After submission of your application by mail, TREC will take about 7-10 days to approve. If applying online, approval is typically granted in 2 days. Also, do not forget to download your FAST Print Pass using the nine digit ID number from your Education award letter and get your finger prints done.

Step 5  Take the Real Estate Exam Prep Class at Champions School of Real Estate®

While your application is being evaluated, we strongly recommend that you complete the state Prep course to ensure you are ready for the State Exam. This class takes the guess work and stress out of testing and you may repeat the course as many times as you want for free up to a full year!

Step 6  Receive Your Letter from the State & Schedule Your State Exam

Once you receive your approval letter and the "Candidate Information Brochure" (CIB) from TREC, you must schedule to take your exam with PSI Examination Services. Appointments can be made by calling (800) 733-9267 or visiting www.psiexams.com. The cost is $61 payable to PSI. You must pass the exam with a 70% or higher and you will know if you have passed the exam before you leave the testing center. NOTE: You must pass the state exam within 6 months of the application approval.

Step 7  Take the State Exam at PSI.

Your state exam is divided into two sections, National and State, and will consist of 110 questions with a total of 2.5 hours to complete the exam. 80 Questions will be National with 1.45 hours to complete, while 30 questions will be State with 45 minutes to complete. You will know if you have passed the exam before you leave the testing center. If you have submitted your sponsorship form already, your license will be mailed to your sponsoring broker within 7-10 days of passing the exam. Otherwise, you will be considered "inactive" until you choose a broker and submit the Request to Sponsor Salesperson Applicant form.

Ultimate Goal: Obtain your Real Estate Broker's License. By meeting these Texas real estate license requirements and taking your courses at Champions, you are already on your way!
